"The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in song of thanksgiving." (Psalms 28:7 - NLT)
A few weeks ago, my wife (Corinne - go check out her blog here) and I became the proud parents of a beautiful boy. There is no way to ever describe that moment...and the joy that comes with becoming a father.
Our son is 6 weeks old now and he is becoming more 'sturdy'. In the beginning, his head and body were flopping around and I had to make sure to hold him tight, but at the same time not to hold him too tight. It's a fine balance when it comes to a baby! The same seems to be the case with David declaring that God is our strength AND shield.
In those days ravaged by war, having a shield was essential for your survival. The bigger the shield, the better. But the bigger the shield, the more strength you would require.
Our trust in God is like a shield. The more trust we place in Him and His sovereignty, the better!
If I had to, I would jump in front of the biggest and heaviest truck to stop my child from being harmed. How much more will God protect you? (He already has by giving His son Jesus!)
I'd say this is the pattern:
TRUST (because God helps!) -> JOY -> THANKSGIVING -> DEEPER TRUST
Trust is something that grows out of experience. Above all, I need to be grateful for what God has done - not just for me, but for everybody through Christ! When I look at my son, I know he will trust me more and more, because of the way I've been his help and protection.
I pray that you grow in trusting God with every step you take.
